1988 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Pro
A 1988 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Pro.
What a treat for the eyes and ears we have here. One of the first ever made Tony Rice models by Richard Hoover. This would now be called the Tony Rice Pro, as it has an exquisite set of Brazilian rosewood for the back and sides and a spruce top, which has turned a wonderful amber colour over it’s 36 years of life. It also has one of the early labels with both Richard Hoover and his old business partner, Bruce Ross’s name and it’s of course signed by Tony Rice himself.
This guitar is supremely balanced and packed with power. It really is an awesome sounding dreadnought and plays fantastically well due to it’s low profile V shaped neck. Due to it’s age it’s warmed up beautifully as well and offers a dry, resonant, punchy vintage tone, built for not just fast bluegrass licks, but for any style of music really.
It’s in excellent condition for it’s 36 years, with the only real things to mention being some overall lacquer checking to the top, a very tiny spot of wear to the soundhole and a repair made to the bridge at some point in it’s life. The back is free of any wear so may have had a respray at some point, but there’s no evidence of any cleated cracks looking inside. Santa Cruz guitars are very lightly built, so It’s had a neck reset at some point, indicated by the slight fretboard fallaway as it joins the body. This means it has plenty of height left in the current saddle, so it’s setup and ready to rip for many decades to come.
It travels in a TKL hardcase which is in great condition and offers some fantastic protection for this treasured piece.
